Conditions were perfect in Arbroath for a game of football, and Kirrie started the brighter of the two teams.

Neither keepers were tested early on but it no surprise that Kirrie took the lead through Coutts midday way through the first half.  St Murdoch's battled well but in their first serious attack McLaren had to do was pick the ball out of the net, despite valiant efforts from Laing to keep the ball out.  Just before half time Brendan Clark was fouled just outside the box and Carnegie stepped up to curl the resultant free kick high into the top corner of the St Murdoch's goal, adding to the free kick he scored earlier on the season against Dundee Celtic.  Kirrie then had the majority of possession without really testing the oppositions goalkeeper. The first half ended 2-1, on the balance of play Kirrie deserved the interval lead.

The second half started with a double substitution, H Clark replacing Watt and Hayter replacing Coutts.  The Hayter substitution paid off almost immediately when he took a pass from Easson and slotted it into the net. Hayter then added a second when he poked home a cross from Ferguson.  Hayter's hat-trick was completed when he superbly chested a through ball from Buchanan and hit an unstoppable shot into the corner of the net.   There were no further goals for the away side but Kirrie had plenty of possession and created a lot of problems particularly down the right side where Ferguson gave the left back a torrid time.  In the dying minutes St Murdoch's scored a consolation goal in one of their few attacks in the second half.

The manager commented after the game, "the first half was not one of our better performances, we had plenty of possession but our passing and our general midfield play were not as good as they have been in previous weeks.  We went into half-time with a slender but deserved lead but we knew we would have to increase out work rate if we were going to win the game and it was important that Ross and Buchanan got more involved in the game.  The second half brought a greater work rate form everyone, Ross and Buchanan raised their game and played very well in a second half where our passing were a lot crisper and we created many chances with most them coming from some great runs and crosses from Ferguson.  The introduction of Hayter gave us a greater goal threat and his 3 goals and overall performance were impressive."
